I will try to not over-complicate my situation here, so please bear with me.

We had a Samsung 5.1 Blu-ray that worked flawlessly for years. The hookup was simple. Just went Comcast box out via HDMI to the Samsung’s HDMI input, then to the Insignia TV’s HDMI input via the Samsung’s HDMI output. Had 5.1 surround on everything. LOVED it.Then the Samsung died.

Found an older used model Samsung 5.1 unit on eBay. Took a chance, pulled the trigger, and hooked it up, but this one only has HDMI output, but not an input.

So had to resort to going Comcast box via HDMI into the TV, and then taking the Optical out from the TV into the Optical input of the Samsung.

This worked great…until we started noticing the front left speaker (yes, only the front left) will cut in and out on some channels, but not others. During loud peaks, the speaker perks up, but then goes silent during quiet parts.

Starting thinking the Samsung was defective, but all speakers work flawlessly when playing a disc, or using the tone level checker.

So then I toggled the TV’s audio setting for Digital/SPDIF from Raw to PCM. Sound on all speakers now, but if I am reading the web correctly, this is only producing L and R stereo and not 5.1 surround.

Our Comcast box has HDMI out, Optical out, Composite Video out, and L & R audio out.
Our Insignia TV has HDMI1 & HDMI2, Composite Video in, L&R audio in, Optical.
Our Samsung has HDMI out, L&R AUX in, Optical.

So how can I get 5.1 surround on my cable channels without the front left speaker cutting out?
