Gtx 970 to AMD 580 make sense?

Solution
Not really, no. The 580 does perfom better but not enough to justify the 200 dollar price tag in my opinion. I wouldn't consider anything below a 1070 to be a worthwhile upgrade from a 970.

No, not imo. I own the 970 FTW so I've done and am still doing research until I can afford the upgrade. The 580 is more of a slantgrade. Same amount of VRAM and only a little better performance. Then the 1060 6GB comes into view. There's more VRAM but a performance pretty similar to the 580. Enter the 1070. That is the upgrade path I am strongly considering. MAYBE the 1080. That means a monitor upgrade. AMD just doesn't have anything at the current moment that can compete the the higher end Nvidia GPUs. AMD stepped up with Ryzen but slacking with the GPUs. Better with DX12 an Vulcan titles the 580 is than the 1060 but the performance level of the 1080 can't be touched by AMD.

The $160 1060, even the 3 GB is faster overall than the 970 ... The 580 is only about 15% faster than what you have and a reference card won't bring much on the resale market so hard to justify the cost for such a small increase in performance

The 580 edges the 1060 6GB by a little bit but that advantage is quickly erased and then some by the 1060's much greater OC headroom.
