Hello and thanks for any help in advance.

I'm in the process of building a new machine with mostly new components. I've based the system on an Asus z170-a motherboard with a 7600k processor, evga 650w power supply and 16gb of corsair ram.

Using the on-board graphics everything works nicely. However when I plug in my old graphics card (gigabyte gtx970 twin turbo oc) I get mixed results. Sometimes the system will boot and use the graphics card, sometimes it will use the on-board graphics and the gtx970 won't be detected (in windows or in the bios) and sometimes the system won't post and I simply get a screen with an underscore. When the latter happens I have to remove the card and reboot to get the system to post.

I've tried a different graphics card (older gen card) and everything works correctly which would point to the gtx970 being the issue but when I put the gtx970 in my older machine it works faultlessly.

I've upgraded the the motherboard bios to the latest version. Beyond that I'm a bit lost, are there any motherboard settings I should be tweaking? Or is it the case that these components just won't work together.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

are you plugging in the monitor to the gpu?

also are you using an adapter to do so?

I actually have a monitor plugged in to both the GPU and the on board graphics so I can see the output whatever the motherboard decides to use.

No adapters are in use
