Hi all,
I bought an after market CPU cooler (Enermax ETS-n31) to replace the stock cooler on my FX-6300. I started it up the first time at the previous speed (3.9 ghz) and it worked fine, about 10 c cooler, so I rebooted and oc'd into 4.2 ghz. It also booted up this time and it did not show abnormal temperatures (the same as the stock fan was running at 3.9 ghz) but I opened a game. It still showed no temperatures out of the ordinary but then my pc completely froze. I manually powered down and it went through all the normal procedures but then showed a BSOD, error code SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. It did not restart after the bsod so I did that manually as well and it booted fine but as a precaution I did GO2BIOS and brought it down to 4 ghz. It works fine now, on the same game doing the same area, but I'm just wondering, why did it BSOD?

Solution
Because it's unstable at 4.2Ghz, did you up the voltage? Just because it boots fine doesn't mean it's unstable. Heck you could even run benchmark fine and still fail at stress test if it's unstable.

I used to own an FX-6300 chip that could up to 4.3Ghz stable without changing voltage, but it's a golden chip as it's able to overclock up to magical 5.0Ghz. Most chips wouldn't go that far.

Your system was unstable, simple, you need to test your overclocks for stability.
