Hi guys,

I have a budget of around $500 to upgrade my CPU and motherboard while my Samsung 850 EVO SSD, RM750x and 8GB RAM sit happily in my Corsair 400C cabinet chirping along with an Asus GTX960 4GB card.

It is absolutely necessary the CPU & motherboard be able to play Cities Skylines perfectly. As far as I have read, the games utilizes 4 cores. Also I sometimes play The Witcher 3 and FIFA 17 which run at high on my current setup (i3 6100, B250M motherboard) so not a factor but my system does lag when cities become highly populated in Cities Skylines. Since I work, I don't get time for much else. Currently I have a 1080p/60Hz monitor and will upgrade to 1440p monitor maybe around a year later.

I have another Asus GTX960 4GB card from one of my friends but can't use it currently on my i3 6100, B250M motherboard. Among the CPUs, I have been thinking about a Ryzen 1600x or Intel 7600K. So here are the parameters I want you to keep me in mind while selecting a combo:

1) SLI support is absolutely necessary, I believe x8/x8 dual mode should be good.

2) Not a big requirement for overclocking

3) Ryzen 1600x along with X370 board seems a good option. Asus Crosshair VI Hero and Gigabyte Gaming boards seem good, however confused between Gaming K3/K5/5/7. So please suggest in this case.

4) In case of Intel 7600K, I believe I need a Z270 board and the number of Z270 boards is just so damn high so please sort a suitable one in this case.

5) The fact that AMD has assured to release mid range CPUs on the AM4 platform for the next 3 years makes me incline towards them for the fact that if I get a good AM4 board now, I can buy my next CPU 3 years later and thus should be able to get out 6/7 years out of my motherboard.

6) I have a CM 212 LED Turbo CPU air cooler and the motherboard must be compatible with that. Is overclocking possible with this cooler?

Thanks for your help as always.

If you want to SLI the Ryzen should fare better. SLI generally require more CPU overhead and hopefully with more core more threads that would reduce the stutter you get from SLI. Crosshair VI Hero looks like a solid choice, get it if money is not of concern. The CM 212 LED Turbo should allow some overclocking but it's pretty unlikely to get >3.9Ghz.

I would suggest AM4 too and as your cooler supports AM4 socket, you could go with any AM4 board, forget Gigabyte, they completely messed up the bioses for AM4, if you google that you will see what I mean, they have the worst out there, ASUS are the best closely followed by MSI.
