I5 6400 OC and GTX1080 or ti

My friend is looking to upgrade from a 390x to a GTX1080 or 1080ti, he is looking to play 4K and on a 2K@144Hz monitor. Would that be possible with an i5 6400@4.4Ghz?

I'm assuming it will be struggling at high FPS at 2K.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

at higher res, the load increases on gpu while its the same on the cpu. so if the game is not cpu intensive, it will give good fps.

Just to give you an idea, at 1440p, the difference between a GTX 1080 and 1080Ti running Watchdogs 2 is 58FPS to 76FPS. At 4K, it's 32 vs. 43. Point being, there's not only a massive performance difference, but price difference as well. So he'd have to determine if the performance improvement of the 1080Ti is worth the money over the 1080.

But would the 1080ti and the i5 6400@4.4Ghz work well together? Or would there be large bottlenecks?

there will be a considerable bottleneck in 1080p and moderate bottleneck @ 1440p. at 4k, it depends on games.
in 1080p, the i5 cant produce that many fps whereas the 1080ti can. u can relate to higher res right?

You won't get 4.4Ghz on a i5 6400. It's a locked CPU so you can only BLCK overclock, he would be lucky to get 3.5Ghz that way. This is not a going to hold 60fps in modern AAA games.

^ interesting, still the result would be almost the same[expect a 10-15% improvement if its bottlenecked]. its not hyperthreaded.

10-15% difference between the 1080 vs 1080ti? I have a 1080ti myself so might test it in his rig and see what it's capable of so.

i meant a 10-15% diff in frame rates. be it 1080 or the 1080ti in 1080p. both will bottleneck that 6400 @ 4.4ghz
