I've had this problem of my monitor suddenly going black while playing games for about 5 years now. I have to admit, I haven't tried much to resolve it. The furthest I've gone is replacing the thermal paste on my CPU and GPU, and that hasn't helped.
My computer doesn't shut down completely once the screen goes black, just the video cuts out.
Is there some kind of diagnostic tool I can run to determine the cause of the problem (preferably web- or Linux-based)? I think something in the motherboard is shutting down the video under temperatures that are actually perfectly normal and safe. I should note, this behavior didn't start until I hooked a second monitor up to my video card. My PSU is only 600W, which was barely capable of powering the entire system back when I had it assembled in 2011.
Thanks.
