PCIe SSD Compatibility - ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO

I am looking to get a Samsung 960 PRO M.2 but I am not sure if my motherboard will support it. I have attempted to look online for the answer, but I can't seem to get a straight answer.

No. That board does not have M.2 slot, so there's no way to connect M.2 SSD.
You could try PCIe adapter card like that https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=12K-017B-00001 but the chance is, you could not use that SSD as boot drive.

just get a regular ssd, the real world difference between those 2 is almsot not noticeable.

Thanks for the info. A few people on in the reviews of that adapter card seem to be using it to boot to Windows. Do you think mine won't boot because it's older? Or are they just flaky to boot to?

I currently have a Samsung 840 PRO in my system, but I was looking to upgrade to a new system and give my wife this system with a new hard drive. My computer is only 4 years old and hers is pushing 9. I might just give her the 840 PRO and save myself the headache.

The problems lies in how the motherboard will recognize that SSD connected through adapter. In theory BIOS is capable of booting from external devices (like it does when installing Win from USB stick), but in practice it's all down to given mobo-adapter combo. Some might work plug'n'play, some may need some BIOS settings tweaking, and some others may refuse to work.
