What is needed in a graphics card.

I want to know what makes a 4gb card faster than another GPU that has the same VRAM? I saw benchmarks form a 1060 3gb and a 1050 ti 4gb and the 1060 did so much better, why? What is it in theses new gpu's that make them faster even tho they have the same or less VRAM? I would like a detailed explanation if possible.

*update* Like in games like GTA 5 where there is a bar where is shows your VRAM, wouldn't you need more VRAM to make out settings in GTA?

The actual graphics chip is the most critical part. The 1060 and 1050 refer to different graphics chips, where the 1060 has more computing units of various sorts. In those names the "10" simply refers to the generation while "-60" vs "-50" informs you the former is a tier higher within that generation og GeForce chips.

Observe that the 1060 chip has 1152 or 1280 "Cuda Cores" while the 1050 has 768 or 640 of the same. It also has a higher default clock frequency and a faster VRAM connection (denoted by a wider memory bus, 192 bit as opposed to 128)

Think of the VRAM as like a storage for the memory the graphics in your game is using up. Having more VRAM doesnt actually make the GPU faster, you just need to have more VRAM than what the game uses.

Let's take for example a game running at Ultra settings in 1080p using up 2.5gbs of VRAM. A GPU that only has 1gb of VRAM will lower FPS drastically while a GPU with a 3gb VRAM will run it better, but a GPU with lower cores but has 4gbps of VRAM will run slower than the one with 3gb

Oh OK makes more seance, i thought more VRAM means you can max out more settings, lol this cleared things up for me thanks.

Well in a way yes, maxing out your settings in a game will increase VRAM consumption, but as long as that amount is still lower than the amount of VRAM in your GPU it will be fine.
