Can I mix RAM sizes?

I have two RAM slots, that are dual channel. Currently I have two 4GB ballistix sport lt 2400 sticks in them. If I were to buy an 8GB ballistix sport lt 2400 that is exactly the same, except for the size, would it work correctly with one of the 4GB modules, for a total of 12GB? Couldn't find a clear answer on this, I have seen mixed answers. Thanks ahead of time!

Heads or tails call it in the air!

too many variables to actually say one way or another. if it doesn't (and you can only use the new RAM) you have still doubled your RAM and that is a big boost.
the only way to tell is to actually try. put them in and run memtest for a few passes. windows has a memory diagnostic test too.

*and by work I assume you mean stable.

If I could only use the new RAM, I would still have the same amount of RAM, right? I have 8GB now. I am going to try. I guess worse case scenario I still have 8GB, and I can just buy another 8GB module of the same type to go with it when I can.
