Cpu upgrade for 1080 ti

I currently have a intel 6600k with a msi z170-a pro mobo, it performs great, but i need to be able to run games like Gta V on 150 fps on pretty much max settings. I've been thinking about the 6800k, but i really need some help. I don't have a budget limit, but i don't want to spent too much money on the upgrade.
I would prefer an intel cpu.

The launch was initially scheduled for Jan 2018, however, after Ryzen launched they allegedly shat their pants and pushed the launch forward to early Q4 2017. Whether they can deliver or not we don't know, also we are not really sure if the 6 core price is going to be very close to the current price of 7700k as people say. Most of this information is not official so take it with a grain of salt.

The upgrade won't be that noticeable from a cost/gain...

If you OC the 6600k to 4.5-46 or so, there is pretty much no significant difference between that and the 7700k. There is a few fps difference in some games but I really doubt that one could tell the difference without running benchmarks.

6800k is pointless for gaming, and even more pointless for anything else as cheaper multi-core options are available for productivity from AMD. If you only want intel, it would be wise to keep your 6600k and wait for their next lineup if you want more than 4 cores.

But if i buy the 7700k, will i be able to install it in my current mobo.
I have a noctua nh-d15, so if i overclock the 7700k to something like 5,2ghz, will i be able to feel any significant difference between the 6600k overclocked to 4,5ghz and the 7700k @5,2ghz

You can install the 7700k on your motherboard, you just need to update bios before removing your current CPU. I really doubt that the difference can be felt, there will be roughly10-15% increase in GTA V where you are not GPU bound. And the difference is in high fps range above 120. Increases in high fps range are harder to distinguish. For example, as you know, even a 20fps difference between 120 and 140 fps is much harder to tell than 20 fps difference between 40 and 60.

I know, the 6600k is running Gta V with around 100fps, do you think the 7700k overclocked as much as i can, can tun the game with 120-140?

I just tested on my own system, it runs around 135fps with a minimum of 90fps with some settings turned down. So you will be able to get somewhere between 120 and 140fps, maybe even a bit higher.

Thank you for testing it for me i really appreciate the help, is there any other intel cpu's in the same pricerange that performs slightly better?
Did you overclock your cpu when testing it?

yes but that will cost you a bit more than a 1000 dollars, whats the problem . like does that 10 fps matter that much>?

I tested with my CPU overclocked to 5.2ghz. I don't think intel has anything else that have better performance at this price range. There is the 7700 locked CPU but you can't overclock that so compared to the overclocked 6600k it wouldn't be that much faster.

intel will be hitting hard with the next line up, at least there will be a 6 core CPUs at great prices, so I would wait for now.

But if it's a 6 core i would need socket R right?
So do you think upgrading to the 7700k would be worth it?

Early news indicates that intel's next generation i5-i8 are not only socket 1151, they are also compatible with current motherboards. So as far as we know, the new 6 core should fit right into current motherboards with a bios upgrade. It will essentially be a 6 core 7700k, as the architecture is the same as skylake.

Whether it is worth upgrading your 6600k to a 7700k, I would say no. However, this depends on your financial situation. If you remove the cost from the picture, it will be worth it from a "feel good" perspective. From a purely practical cost/gain perspective it is not worth it unless you can sell your 6600k at the same or close to the price you bought it.

I bought the 6600k for 180$, and i think i can sell it for around 100-150, i can get a 7700k used for 270$, do you know when the next lineup is going to be released, i think i will have to wait 1 month or 2 for the price to drop, and i don't want to wait more than ½ year.

The upgrade won't be that noticeable from a cost/gain perspective, that said, I myself wouldn't feel good about a 4 thread processor in 2017, so from a feelings perspective, the upgrade might be justified.
