APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Within 3 weeks.
BUDGET: CAD up to $200 (Before Rebates, before shipping and handling)

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming (bf4/bf1, arma 3, dayZ) on low/med settings at very high fps (over 120 if possible)

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: integrated graphics (Intel HD 2000), and there's a 35w ceiling for the graphics card (that's the limit HP has set)

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: cpu: intel i5 3450s, mobo: IPISB-NK LAVACA3-SB, memory: 8gb DDR3-1600 (hp doesn't specify the manufacturer)

PREFERRED WEBSITES FOR PARTS: newegg.com and canadacomputers.com

PARTS PREFERENCES: It must be a mxm 3.0 type a and use less than 35w

OVERCLOCKING: It would be nice but i can live without it.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Native resolution is 1920 x 1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I am trying to upgrade the graphics for an HP envy 23 d038c, which is why the restrictions are so tight.

I would like to play bf4/bf1 and arma 3 on low-med settings at high FPS (over 120 if possible). Then there are other games I can run on integrated graphics (CS:GO, TF2, dirty bomb) but i want to be able to run them on low-med settings at very high fps (over 180).

dont really think newegg and canada computers is the best place to find that part though, ebay probably a better place to find mxm graphics card but ebay kinda risky for sure, i cant really tell what mxm graphics card compatible with your computer, but for sure its kinda hard to get detailed info about your computer. btw is it has power supply inside the machine or using a power brick? if it is power brick then finding a suitable power brick with bigger power may help to make more room for upgrades(?)

If I understand what a power brick is (that being a brick on the external power cord), then yes, it does have one.
So I just need get a beefier power brick? How can i tell the mobo can handle giving more power to the gpu?

Yes, it is an HP Envy 23 d038c, which matches the link you gave me. It's an all-in-one desktop though, not a laptop.

is your gpu an mxm3.0a or mxm 3.0b?

here a database of gpus

it should be though, because basically all in one computer component pretty much the same like laptop, the main reason about that is because mobile gpu were much more efficient compared to desktop gpu that usually kinda power hungry. try to find the suitable power brick with larger power output(bigger watt)

Will my motherboard be able to handle this? https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-23-d000-touchsmart-all-in-one-desktop-pc-series/5295879/model/5296831/document/c03305138

Can i just slap in a massive power brick and put in a more power hungry mxm 3.0 type a graphics card?

sorry for the late reply, life got in the way. hopefully you can still help

I don't have a GPU, i use integrated graphics. mxm3.0a is compatible with my computer.

sorry for the late reply, real life got in the way. hopefully you can still help

it might be possible to slap in massive power brick and put in power hungry mxm 3.0 graphics card, just make sure you get the correct one that is enough to supply power for all components, check the graphics card power requirement first to make sure how much you need

you could consider a gtx1050. it is a mxm 3.0a and it has a 75w TDP. Ma

I'm guessing it would need to have the same voltage and amperage rating, right? Also, how do i tell that it uses the same power cable (the one that goes into the computer) that mine uses? Edit: And where the heck can i find one? I can't find an external psu on ebay, newegg, or canada computers.

I'm guessing you want me to use the method nvcincent_08 proposed of getting a beefier external PSU. But I have no idea where to find one. I searched all over ebay, newegg, and canada computers. Where can i find an external PSU that meets these requirements?

the adapter plug is the same as other hp laptop product right? if it is you might be able to get a laptop adapter that have bigger power output

I have no idea. My PSU outputs 150w, and most laptop psus of the same voltage output much less watts. How do i tell that other PSUs work with my computer?

just see the plug to the device itself, if it is the same plug then it should work with power brick that made for other hp computer devices. how bout this one? https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Compatible-HSTNN-CA16-HSTNN-DA16-608431-001/dp/B00JRGHYPM

sadly... i dont think it will. My connector is ~12mm long and ~7mm wide. (measuring the metal part). The connector in the link you sent is different.

That's not quite right. 123W includes the consumption of the desktop mobo, cpu, and a few other options selected. With nothing selected but the CPU, it's 60w.

Using that power calculator is kind of difficult because my pc uses uAIX mobo form factor which isn't listed (so i chose mini-itx) Apparently everything I have is at 100% of my PSU limit (I entered in my cpu, ram, hdd, keyboard + mouse, monitor WLAN and ethernet cards, mini itx mobo, blu-ray disc drive, and my single fan). It says it uses ~150w, which is the limit of the PSU. This doesn't make sense. HP says a mxm card can be installed that uses 35w on top of this.

I used (this product info page (click here)).

So, if i were to take a rough guess, my pc's power consumption would be (150-35) 115 watts.

Now i discovered something else: If i unplug my blu-ray drive I could free up another 30-35w according to this site, which means my graphics card could use up to 70w now! Maybe instead of trying to look for PSU I could abandon my blu-ray drive. Does that sound like a good idea?

actually instead of upgrading my psu, how about i just unplug my disc drive so that I can get another ~30w of headroom for my gpu? then i could save some money and have a few more options perhaps?

Yeah it has been a lot of trouble, but finally I figured out how to use the filters on techpowerup's gpu browser, and I learned how to only show mxm 3.0 type a gpus and sort them by date. The most powerful one, the AMD Radeon E9260 mxm is perfect, it was released last year (hopefully should be easy to find), and uses only 50w which leaves a lot more headroom.

okay, if you graphics card that already suit your needs then i guess it means problem already solved?

not yet... i looked through all the USA and canada mxm resellers list and couldn't find it. I will update this thread once i give up, find this card, or perhaps another.
