Hello forums,

I'm looking to upgrade my rig from a gtx 970 and I game at 1080p and stream downscaled to 720p.

What card should i upgrade to? looking at gtx 1070,1080 and 1080ti.

Is the 1080ti worth it for 1080p gaming?

Might buy a 4k monitor next summer.

Depends on the games you play and your Nvidia/in-game graphic settings.

A GTX 1060 (or your current GTX 970) is good enough for basic 1080p gaming on a 60Hz monitor. Some selected AAA games (GPU-hungry games) can't be maxed out (Ultra settings) at constant 60fps.

Consider the GTX 1070 if your looking at those types of AAA games maxing out/at constant 60fps or at ~100Hz+ / ~100fps on non-AAA titles in 1080p.

Consider the GTX 1080 if you'd be gaming on max. settings at 1080p / ~144Hz+ and preferably with a G-Sync capable monitor.

The GTX 1080 Ti, for me, is overkill in 1080p. I'd only consider the Ti if your looking to game at 1440p resolution at 144Hz+++ (or on 4K resolution monitors).

Thanks for your response. Dumb question....I have a 65" 3840x2160p - 60Hz TV...could i game @ 4k on that with a 1080TI?

You're welcome. Well, you have 4K resolution TV, so you can. But quality might not be the best (probably laggy and Picture Quality not as good as a 4K monitor with higher/denser pixel per inch). You could try to (after you get the GTX 1080Ti since you'll be buying a 4K monitor next summer anyway as you mentioned) and it's very subjective to tell if you would be satisfied or not gaming on a 4K TV.

Note that most, if not all TV's have no Display Port input ports, so, check the GTX 1080Ti for the output ports (HDMI for the 4K TV), though some have used a DP-to-HDMI adapter and can output 4K@60Hz on their TV's just fine. Check your TV if the HDMI version is 2.0 (lower versions would not support true 60Hz, only 30Hz).

The best GPU for 1080P is a open ended question. Best for 200FPS or 30FPS is the real question. I think AMD makes solid budget 1080P cards that can run anything at 60fps or above. Get a RX 480/580 is you only have $150 to spend. If you have all the money in the world go with the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti for 200+ fps.
