If ccleaner is safe (according to one closed thread), why does McAffee warn not to use it and Norton removes the downloaded binary.

i'd be more worried about using norton and mcafee to be perfectly honest! ccleaner is great , been using it for years and years , with zero issues .

In addition to the suggestions above me buy the Senior Moderator , i would suggest , https://www.virustotal.com/ if you wish to scan a file before opening it .

also perhaps the file you downloaded was not from the creator of CCleaner ? https://www.piriform.com/

did they ever ? system hogs and false positive galore! is all i know them for . oh and well publicised money makers :p far better free stuff out there since they were even remotely relevant imo . i can understand why the OP has them on their system though.. because the often come packaged with ISPs or pre builds

15 years ago they were decent

this days are very popular on companies, you install them and lock alot of services on pcs like usb ports, optical drives and similar stuff, useful for machines that are not under a domain

other than that, no, it is just gigabytes of space wasted

i disliked them 15 years ago! i was a trend micro man! they may offer decent service for the business sector though. for your average consumer i would not and never have recommended them . with web browsers like chrome and firefox trying to stop you enter sites at every turn , windows defender beeping at me every time i download and open something , i don't have chance to download myself a problem to solve these days .:??:

must be nearly 10 years since i last ran hijackthis ! i feel sad now . malware nostalgia :(

You can use CCleaner, yes. But, it's best to never ever use the " Registry Cleaner " that comes within the program as it'll will cause a huge issue to which you've have to factory reset like i had been through.
