My PC that I've har for a year now, working perfectly suddenly cannot connect to the internet today. There was a new windows update yesterday, so i shut off my pc and let the update do its thing overnight. When i turned my pc on again this morning there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to my network icon, and when I click on it this pops up: "Unidentified Network, No internet". I've tried everything I could find on the internet. Restart everything, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /renew, test on another computer (my laptop connects just fine btw) etc. I get the infamous 169.x.x.x ip adress in ipconfig. Help, please

Go into device manager, and uninstall your network adapter. Then use the scan for new hardware button

169 means the signal isn't leaving the computer, so something is wrong with the port/driver.

You can also open command prompt (as admin) and type
sfc /scannow
this will repair any system files that may be broken.

So did you try downloading the LAN drivers for your PC on your laptop and then transferring them over with a USB drive and installing them?

Try that first then if it doesn't work, try the following:

there's an advanced thing you can try.
Unplug your ethernet cable.
Open RegEdit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
and then delete all those {NUMBERS} entries listed under it.

Plug your ethernet cable back in.

This makes your computer forget what it knows about any internet connections.

Installing driver from asus website - "latest driver installed" from windows. I expected this but worth a shot anyway.
RegEdit - deleting every entry under profiles has not fixed it either.

OH MY GOD. I fixed it. I did this before but deleting the driver and then scanning for hardware changes worked this time. It didn't work before but now it did hahaha

Windows Troubleshooter says "the default gateway is not available" and says its fixed. Everything seems fine although when actually connecting to the internet through google chrome or discord it still says no internet connection, and then its back to limited on the internet icon.
I've set the settings through ethernet - properties - internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to the ones you told me. It reidentified and it still says unidentified. The settings are set to the following, as per your request;
"Use the following IP Adress:
IP adress: 192.168.0.201
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
Use the following DNS adresses:
Blank and blank"¨
IPv6 is unchecked.

Command was successful, but did not fix the problem. I'll reinstall windows and see if it gets fixed, if not I guess I'l have to buy a new NIC?

Try swapping your network cable between the router and NIC. It could be the issue also. If still no connection, then quite possibly the NIC is faulty. However also check to see if there are any other drivers you can test. Windows 10 has problems with some drivers that where released earlier for w7 & 8. Good luck!

Tried like 5 different cables so I know the computer is the problem. I've downloaded the latest WIN10 drivers from both Intel and ASUS, so the driver is not the problem.

Yeah, it's not impossible for a NIC to randomly die, if it's a kinda cheap prebuilt desktop, i wouldn't be surprised it happened. It may not really be related to a Windows 10 update so much as a "well Windows 10 needs to restart because of an update. Restarts. NIC DIES. Apply updates. No internet."

It's not a cheap prebuilt though.. it's an ASUS x99-a, so it's really weird that it died overnight after not even a year of use. I have contacted asus though and I'll talk to them and see if they can fix it/send me a new motherboard
