Should I install a second GTX970 or upgrade to GTX2080 when they've been released?

I've just recently upgraded my CPU and motherboard and am now feeling a sense of greed for more power.

I'm currently running an MSI Geforce GTX970 with Intel I7-7700K and Asus Prime Z270A motherboard (so I know it supports 2xGPU's)

Should I upgrade with a second GTX970 or wait for the next-gen GPU's to come out and install one only?

My primary uses with my PC are for gaming and streaming - games can be anything from high-demanding games like GTA V, COD MW Re-mastered and Dark Souls III to less demanding games like Hearthstone, Player's Unknown Battlegrounds, and Stardew Valley.

I have a 970 SLI rig for 1440p. If you are running a 1080p 60Hz non-Gsync monitor then there really is no need to get a second 970. They are also starting to show their age being three years old now and games creeping up to 3+ GB VRAM use even at 1080p, but I have not come across any issues yet even at 1440p.

I would not put more money in one even though used you can find them for $150 (USD) or so on eBay. The only exception would be in only a handful of games like Watchdogs 2 and Dues Ex which at 1080p run below 50FPS with a single 970. Just about every other game, new and a few years old, run 1080p on a single 970 just fine.

Also regarding SLI, some games just do not scale well with a second GPU, so you would further be wasting...

Nvidia is giving a 2000-series GP-10x Pascal refresh starting in the late summer. Expect those GPUs to be similar to the GTX 7xx Kepler refresh over the GTX 6xx series and gaining 10-15%.

However, Nvidia's next generation Volta GV10x 3000-series is rumored to be released in Q2 2018. Nvidia's road map going into 2018 is hinting their Volta will be twice as powerful as the 1000-series Pascal. I'm trying to hold out another year with my 970 SLI setup for just that and skip Pascal.
