Motherboard BURNT OUT.

I recently just set up dual monitors for my computer. They were both HDMI and i plugged one into my gtx 1070, the other into my motherboard. I was running the computer, browsing internet and playing games (games on the gtx 1070 monitor). I went downstairs for a bit...leaving my computer running. When i returned shortly after, my PC had shutdown and i could smell smoke. (Smoke was like plastic). I tried turning on the computer, it would boot up, lights would come on (including motherboard lights) for about 10 seconds before shutting down again.
I then opened my case and had a look around . It wasn't long until i saw some cell box things above the CPU on the motherboard had become charred and the plastic from the motherboard was burnt/warped.

What I'm wondering is how *exactly* this happened (seems obvious it had something to do with the new monitor being plugged into the motherboard). What it is that burnt out (can show pics if needed) and if there is a way to get around this without replacing the motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks heaps!

Motherboard is Gigabyte - GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151

I can share actual photos soon, however it's difficult with the current lightning. (Photos are bad quality).
Hope this helps
