what do you mean by it didn't work? after you turned off the modem and no internet connection or the Internet keeps on disconnecting?
Did you update the router's firmware? wireless or wired connection?

you would go to 192.168.1.1 on the web browser. it requires log on and some where in the administrator setting, there should be an option that said firmware upgrade (you might need to download the firmware). I have a Netgear and it check for firmware automatically.

First off, Tom prefers to keep his forums a bit cleaner than some others. As such vulgarity, foul mouths, swearing, cussing and verbalization of those bad "4 letter" words should be left at the door.

You suspect the modem? What have you done to prove or disprove that? One way would be to leave the router out of the picture and see if the connection drops.

This might be an ip address issue. The router has that job. When it updates the ip address it may not be doing it right.

You called the router people. What about the internet people aka your internet provider? They will want you to remove the router and connect straight from the modem to the PC/laptop. The router is third party hardware outside of their control. A fly in the soup.

4.7.3 Firmware Upgrade
NOTE: Download the latest firmware from the ASUS website at
http://www.asus.com
To upgrade the firmware:
1. From the navigation panel, go to Advanced Settings >
Administration > Firmware Upgrade tab.
2. In the New Firmware File field, click Browse to locate the
downloaded file.
3. Click Upload.
NOTES:
• When the upgrade process is complete, wait for some time for the
system to reboot.
• If the upgrade process fails, the wireless router automatically enters
rescue mode and the power LED indicator on the front panel starts
flashing slowly. To recover or restore the system, refer to section 5.2
