I know it's long but please read it, I need help. :)

I have some complicated setup that I don't understand at my house, I believe it might be Cat5 but there are slots in the wall that you can plug an ethernet cable into and get connected. A few days ago, this stopped working, I have no idea why and at first I thought it was my computer or my room but after testing various devices in different rooms I concluded it was something wrong with the whole system. We have a section on the top floor that has all the technical stuff and I went investigating there. I found a netgear box with a whole bunch of cables connected to it and the box itself was connected to a buffalo box which was turned off although there were lights flashing on the netgear box. I turned the buffalo box on and some lights lit up but that didn't have any noticeable effect. I then noticed that one cable was unplugged from the netgear box and in its place was a different cable connected to a sky box (TV) I unplugged that and re plugged the oriental cable. That also didn't have a noticeable effect. I'm an amateur at best with computers and I'm at a loss as to what might be wrong. Anyone got any suggestions? I don't want to pay hundreds to get an engineer out if it's something I can do myself.

Thanks, in advance, for the help :)

If the router and switch are at different locations, then you need to find the correct cable connecting the two and verify that it is working. In-wall wiring occasionally fails.

Find your modem/ONT (the device you get your internet from) and connect a PC/laptop directly to that to test your internet connectivity. If that doesn't work, call your ISP to troubleshoot it. Once you have working internet, download the Netgear and Buffalo manuals for your equipment models before plugging the modem's cable into the router's (likely the Buffalo box) WAN port. On cable, you will likely need to reset the cable modem before it can receive a new valid IP by poking its reset button or power cycling.

Connect your PC/laptop to one of the router's LAN ports and see if the internet works from there. If it doesn't, check the router's instructions on how to access it. If those instructions don't work, you may need to follow the router's factory reset instructions and proceed to a new router setup from there.

Once the router is working, connect the network switch (the box with tons of cables connected to it) to one of the router's LAN ports, power-cycle the switch to force all other devices to reinitialize their network stack and with a little luck, everything should be working now. If it doesn't, check the switch's manual for troubleshooting steps.

I've plugged a laptop into a port on the Hub and it worked. WiFi also works. I can't connect the netgear or anything to the router because it's 3 floor apart. All the cables from the area with all that stuff just go through a big hole in the wall with tape around it. Also, after the ethernet wall ports stopped working we got a new hub and it still doesn't work.
