My Current PC:

CPU: i7-3820 @ stock speeds
MB: ASUS P9X79 DELUXE LGA 2011
RAM: 16gb G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 1600
GPU: gtx 680
Monitor: ASUS VS248H-P - 1080p 60hz

My planned upgrade:

GPU: GTX 1070 or 1080 or 1080ti
Monitor: 1440p 144hz g-sync TN panel ( found a good dell 24in for $400 )

Basically I want to play at 1440p around 80-100fps but I also want a smooth experience even if I dip below 50fps hence going with a g-sync. I play all types of games ranging from FPS to mmo's and everything in between.

I'm planning on using this new setup for about 3 years before I do a new system build.

Is what I want possible if I were to mix my old hardware with the new hardware I plan on buying?

Solution
If you oc you processor there's no reason it can't be competitive for a few more years drop in a 1080 and enjoy would be my suggestion, also get a SSD if you don't already have one.

I do have a 500gb ssd that I put all of my games on. As far as overclocking, I looked up a couple of youtube videos on how to overclock my CPU but I'm not to savy with the hardware aspect of PC and I'm scared shitless to give it a try. How hard of a hit would I be getting if I kept my CPU at stock speeds?

I have the noctua D14 cooler on there so I could try to OC if I really have too.

It's not too tough to oc that processor there are plenty of YouTube videos to get you pointed in the right direction. It's tougher than a normal one but not crazy different. Just don't turn the voltage up too high and you can't actually hurt anything worst case it won't boot, you reset bios and try again. You could easily get 10-12% more performance out of it with an oc I suspect.

Cool, I'll do some more digging before I give it a try. Last question, which cable would I need to get the maximum out of the monitor I plan on buying? HDMI, DP?

I have no interest in 4k for at least another 3 years, that's why in my first post I stated the 1440p 144hz g-sync monitor. For about $100 more wouldn't the 1080 be a better buy for the next 3 years over the 1070?
