Love my dependable and ultralight Toshiba Portege R835-P88, but I'm desperate to ditch the crowds at 2.4 GHz! Is there a way to bring its snoozy Intel [R] 82579V Gigabit Network Connection/Intel [R] WiFi Link 1000 BGN compatible with the 5GHz world? If a USB device will work, can you recommend one that will work with a Toshiba laptop?

Thanks so much!

Most laptops uses a standard connector for wifi cards. In theory at least any that will fit will work. You also have to be careful to not buy a card that needs more antenna than your computer has. The main thing that causes issue is when the laptop vendor are being jerks. HP has been known to put crap in the bios to restrict the list of supported cards....mostly to try to force you to buy from them. This is not common but you need to check generally you will find posts with people complaining about this.

USB will be somewhat more compatible if you are willing to deal with the external device. Avoid the very tiny adapters, the bigger the device in general the larger the internal antenna. They will never compare to the...

They will never compare to the antenna in your laptop though. Stay with major brands do not get tempted by all the cheap unknown brands you find on amazon. It tends to be hard to get drivers from some of these companies
