Currently I run an i5-4690k and gtx 970 with a 1080p monitor (I understand 1080 ti is for 4k). Question is as the title states and I'm worried about future proofing and possibly setting up for 4k res, on top of just upgrading the build since its running poorly on games I play with ugly frame drops (cant plat PUBG, ds3 frame drops sometimes, for honor, shadow of mordor, etc.). Any suggestions or even tips to boost my current build are appreciated, sorry if I respond late and thank you in advanced if I personally forget to do so!

Unless you're planning on buying a 4k monitor alongside a new CPU and/or GPU, don't overthink it as a "future-proof" setup is always just out of your grasp.

Anyway, higher resolutions affect the GPU a lot more than it does the CPU, but if you're still interested in upgrading your CPU, then the R5 series may peak your interest.

With regards to the 1080 Ti, as long as you can afford it, it should do no harm to your computer.

get an 7700k and motherboard + RAM with the same money of an 1080 ti. Sell your previous ones and get some money back. Your 970 performs just fine for 1080p.When new gpus come out get the x70 version and a 4k monitor and enjoy your 4k experience. And there is your future proof build.Your 7700k will last 4 years easy.

How much do you think my 970 and i5 can fetch, and do you believe that a new mobo (I use a z97-gaming 5 msi), 7700k, and ram (I have 16 gb currently) will really upgrade my performance?

Topic said cpu or 1080 ti and i just answered which one would be best. For 1080p there may be a slight perfomance upgrade, i don't think it will be so great. For 4k most of the load goes to the gpu, so keep it in mind. If you want to play 4k right now, you could get a 1070, asus 1070 strix is very well clocked, and a 4k monitor and it will cost the same money as a 1080 ti .

I realize that my reply seemed snarky, didn't mean it to sound that way and thanks for the replies and suggestions!
