1080TI vs GTX970 - Should i upgrade?

Hi,

Currently i have a MSI GTX970 and in the pursuit of solid FPS i was considering an upgrade to my GPU. I don't play the most top end of games (BF1, PUBG), but i'd like to play them on their max settings and not get crap frame rates - i currently have to play PUBG in low to get 60 FPS, which is probably more to do with poor game optimisation - and i will be buying new titles such as COD, anything with guns really!

Now i know the 1080TI is a totally different league to my 970, and i am just wondering if i should take the plunge, considering my other PC components? Basically i don't want to bottleneck the card by not upgrading my CPU etc.

I have:

CPU: i5 6400 overclocked to 4.4GHz
RAM: HyperX Fury DDR4 2666 C15 2x8GB
MBD: Asus Z170-E

I also have 2 very old SSD's from crucial - i will probably get a m.2 drive if i do any upgrades.

My second option is to spend around 2k on an all new rig, i am just trying to get the best value for my money!

In terms of the 1080TI i'd go for...

I am liking the EVGA hybrid card: https://www.alza.co.uk/evga-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-sc2-hybrid-gaming-icx-d4943207.htm

Alternatively, it'd be the Asus Strix: http://www.ebuyer.com/785730-asus-gtx-1080ti-rog-strix-oc-11gb-gddr5x-graphics-card-rog-strix-gtx1080ti-o11g-gaming

Solution

reference cards are the baseline avoid them

that hybrid is not reference XD

there are no amd cards in this performance bracket currently

custom cooler/hybrids are the way to go

I posted the top versions on my post above if you decide to not go hybrid =)

1080p I assume?

if so your cpu is not good enough

a gtx 1060 6gb is a better match

or a gtx 1070 if you have a 1440p monitor

if you really want the 1080 ti, then I suggest a cpu upgrade ( your motherboard supports the i7 7700k after a bios update) along with a 1440p 144hz monitor
assuming your power supply is half decent

THAT is a worthy upgrade

yeah 1080p. Not fussed about 4k as i dont have the monitor for it and not planning to change (currently got a LG ultra - the 2560 x 1080 one).

I didnt think my CPU was bad to be honest, it was part of a overclocked bundle from overclockers.co.uk (i dont know much about overclocking itself - the bundle came with instructions!)

http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/3777577 - this puts my CPU in the 95th percentile for that CPU, don't know how reliable that is.

OK, then a gtx 1070 is a VERY worthwhile upgrade for you given your ultra wide monitor

a 970 just doesnt have the horsepower for it

your i5 is not bad at all, it's just that at 1080p a 1080 ti would be held back would just be wasted money on fps you would never see

a gtx 1070 is the perfect solution for you

If you care about image quality over frame rate.
A better upgrade would be a G-Sync monitor.
It makes it much harder to notice lower/dipping frame rates.
Plus, at a later date, it will still work with a future upgrade.
