Unable to get 1gbps lan connection

I have pretty weird situation here. Got a contractor to install 2 lan points on both sides of the wall. Let's call it side A and B.

Side A

Room connection - Room Lan access point to router to fibre modem

Here are the initial test.

Lan access point direct to pc - 1gbps lan connection.

Lan access point to dgs1005a gigs switch to the same pc - 1gbps lan connection.

Both are tested with the same cat 5e lan cable. (Blue cable)

So i believe the lan assess point and the blue 5e cable is fine.

The contractor drilled a hole through the wall n installed 1 lan wall jacks on each side.

The cable across the wall is a cat 7 lan cable (<0.5m). Cable tester shows line 1-8 light up green in series 1-8. I assume the point is ok.

On side B

Giga lan port pc with cat 7 lan cable

But I'm only able to connect at 100mbps.

If I connect the same cat 7 cable to a power line, the pc got 1000mbps connection. So I assume the cat 7 cable is fine.

I can't find where the problem lies. The side B pc is set at auto nego mode.

The same cat 7 cable (from side b) I tried on the dgs1005 switch to the pc at side A only gotten 100mbps connection.

I tried

Side A
1. Connecting the blue 5e cable direct to the new wall jack from lan access point
2. Connecting the blue 5e cable to the dgs1005a switch and then to the new wall jack

Side B
2 different cat 5e cables
1 cat 7 cable (mentioned earlier)

but i still only managed to get 100mbps connection.

Anyone can help?

Appears that your contractor daisy chained the ethernet wall outlets.... Okay for telephone ports but not ethernet ports.

Each ethernet wall jack needs to have its' own ethernet cable run back to the router (usually via a patch panel) and its own LAN port on the router.

If you only have one incoming ethernet cable from the router/patch panel to Side A then you will need to run a second cable to serve Side B.

Another option would be to use an ethernet switch connected to the Side A wall port. Then connect your Side A device to one of the switch ports. Connect a second ethernet cable to another port and push the cable through the wall openings to be plugged into a device on Side B.

Caveat being [full disclosure here] that I am...

Is either or both of the ethernet wall outlets dual port by any chance? Could be the contractor set up sort of a "patch panel" via the wall jacks. Still needs at least a switch/hub. Would not fall into "best practices".

Hi Ralston,

I'm not really an expert on these stuff but been playing on it for awhile.

Its more like an extension of the lan cables. Doing the wall jacks is just to cover the drilled hole so that it doesnt look so messy.

From Wall Lan Access Point -> 5e cable -> side A wall jack -> cat7e lan cable -> side B wall jack -> cat7e cable to pc.

the connection i got is 100mbps.

I read from another site and i think i know what you mean
"Yep, you can't daisy-chain Ethernet cables, they MUST terminate in an active device like a switch, hub, router, modem, computer, etc. at each end."

Each side has only 1 lan port. All the contractor did was

1. Drill a hole in the wall
2. Put a cat 7 cable thru the hole
3. a single outlet on each side

I did thought of taking out the wall jacks and just putting a cable through the hole to the side B pc. The weird thing is the cat 7 cable that i have (when connected to the dgs-1005a giga switch) to the pc at side A only connects at 100mbps. If I connect the same cat 7 cable directly to the Lan Access Point (without the switch), it connects at 1000mbps. If i use the blue 5e cable from the switch to the side a pc, it connects at 1000mbps. so i dont know if its the switch problem or its the cable problem. that stopped me from running to the store to get a new cable to try.

Daisy chaining the problem. i swap the old and longer cable over it work perfectly! And the cat 7 cable only works on the "wan" port of the switch. doesnt work on the normal ports.

Summarizing.

On side A only:

Wall Lan Access Point -> Cat5e cable -> pc

= 1000mbps

Wall Lan Access Point -> Cat7 cable -> pc

=1000mbps

Wall LAN Access Point -> Cat5e cable ->switch->Cat5e cable ->pc

=1000mbps

Wall LAN Access Point -> Cat7 cable ->switch->Cat5e cable ->pc

=1000mbps

Wall LAN Access Point -> Cat5e cable ->switch->Cat7 cable ->pc

=100mbps

Going to Side B and including the wall jacks:

Wall Lan Access Point -> 5e cable -> side A wall jack -> cat7 lan cable -> side B wall jack -> cat5e cable to pc.

= 100mbps

Anyway the end "picture" that I currently have is that when either the switch or the wall outlet "extension" is involved performance is reduced to 100 mbps. If both are present "no harm, no foul" as only 100 mbps will work.

My sense is that the problem is twofold: 1) Your switch does not support Cat 7 and in fact downgrades with any such cable connection. 2) The wall jacks that were used may likewise not support Cat 7 and likewise cause a similar affect.
