I'm looking at doing the best bang for buck gaming PC builds for a few people with i5 and i7s but my 4690k i have in my personal build is £252-255 on the net other places as high as £280 and its next step up the i7 4790k is £315 yet the latest kaby lake i5 7600k is selling on ebuyer for £227 which to me makes no sense unless its something to do with there being less of the older gen chips about making them a rarity but still i thought they would sell purely on architecture and performance alone?

The older chips are not being manufactured anymore. If you find any on store shelves they're likely to be overpriced simply because all the stores that sold them at regular prices have long since sold all theirs. And as for the used market, people just sometimes overestimate what stuff is worth.

Just retailers knowing that some people want to give their older pc an upgrade and those people don't want to buy used. It's just them trying to get every bit of money they can from those cpu's.
