Right now I have an i3-4170, gtx 10603gb, 1tb hard drive, 8gb ram. I see quite a few fps drops and just not the performance i would of hoped for. Is it worth upgrading the i3-4170 to an i5-4670k? I am planning on getting a new hard drive too with faster speeds because I think my current one is dying.

Upgrading to the i5 will not increase performance too much if that is what you are thinking. However, it would give you two more cores and overclockability which the i3 doesn't have, which could allow you to get even more performance.

So, basically, it depends on what you are doing. I would say that it would be worth it in your case, since it SHOULD decrease FPS drops since it has more cores and the ability to have a MUCH faster clockspeed.

If you are going to overclock, go for the 4690k if you can because it has better TIM (Thermal Interface Material) which means better temperatures.
