Salvaging DDR3 RAM for new Ryzen build

Hi, everyone. I've been out of the PC building game for a couple of years, but I'm planning a new build since my current gaming rig is starting to show some age.

I have a $900 budget that I'm attempting to stretch to its absolute limit, as I'm moving off to college in a little over two months. I've crammed a Ryzen 7 1700 and an RX 480 in, but I'm trying to shave some dollars off the final tab so I'm not totally bankrupt afterward. I was initially planning to purchase 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, but it turns out that RAM costs money, and I'm a bit over budget at the moment. I have two 4 GB sticks of decent DDR3 RAM that I can cannibalize from my current rig to tide me over until I can afford some DDR4, but I'm wondering if I should just hold off and jump to DDR4 right off the bat so I can use my old rig as a media PC or something.

I could try to raise the extra cash to get DDR4, but I'm wondering if the performance difference is big enough yet to justify it, and if the new hardware will play nice with the older sticks. Any experiences or tips you have to share are appreciated.

Unfortunately you won't be able to use your old ram as it isn't supported. Maybe try selling your old ram on eBay. Ddr3 is still fetching a good price. Ram in general seems to be up in price now. The ram kit I bought a year ago has almost doubled in price.
