my specs are

i5 4460

gtx 1070 8gb vram

msi g45 z97 gaming motherboared

24gbs of ram

i like plaing games at over 80-144fps

my parts have been serving me well but i always thought that my cpu was just maybe a bit to slow or something? is it worth upgrading to an i7 4th gen or getting a new mobo and getting an i7 6th or 7th gen?

will it last through 2017 go through current games over 80fps just fine on high settings like prey ore something?

If you can buy the 4690K for $100 I might if I could see it working. You do have a Z97 board(was not expecting that with the 4460) so OC'ing could net you a few more FPS. You might see a 15-20FPS difference depending on the OC. If that was the difference between 50 and 65FPS it would be worth it to me. If it were the difference between 100 and 115 it wouldn't be worth it. It depends where you are now with your games and if you have a G-Sync compatible monitor or if you are confined to only using vsync.

At its current $180-$200 price point I don't see the investment being worth the return. If I had an extra hundred and could snag a good one used, that'd be...
Do you have a ~144hz display? If so, you probably would see a gain from a faster CPU, particularly if you prefer to push over 100fps and are prepared to turn your detail settings down to actually achieve that. I do agree with @Techy though, your CPU is still solid and there's no pressing need to upgrade even with a 144hz display, but it's not pointless... you would see some gains.

If you've got a 60hz display then there's basically no point in upgrading whatsoever.

I own the 4690K but only have 8GB RAM and a 970 FTW from EVGA. My next upgrade will be the RAM and then onto a 1070 or 1080. I've seen no reason to upgrade my 4690K yet.
