I am looking to build a gaming pc and I don't know if I better buy a geforce gtx 980 or a geforce gtx 1060. They both cost around the same

the 980 is a little stronger than the 1060 iirc. Also offers the option of SLI in the future, which the 1060 does not.

the 1060 uses a newer architecture which will be draw less power and heat. but if you do not care about those things then the 980 would be the better of the 2 dependinfg on how much vram it has

Assuming that we're talking about the GTX 1060 6GB, then that's what you should go for. The 980 is almost three years old and won't benefit from updated drivers like a 1060 would.

You should only buy the 980 if it's significantly cheaper than the 1060.

When the gtx 1060 first came out, the 980 benched higher. The 1060 has been out for a while now, with many driver updates to enhance it's performance and compatibility with newer triple A titles. I opted for the 980 back then, but now i'd choose the 1060 over the 980.
