Better graphic card option: RX480 vs MSI GTX 1070

Solution
It can be - depends on the game.
I've got the RX480 4GB and am very happy with it but I think most AAA games perform better on the GTX 1070. I think the RX480 is more comparable to the GTX 1060. The RX480 may be a little more future proof with DX12 and vulkan but only time will tell.
Short answer: yes

Long answer: kinda? the 1070 will be relevant much longer than the 480, use less power, and give better performance, and for a lot of people the extra money spent on the 1070 is worth that. It's kind of up to your wallet at 1080p though. Any more than that and you're better off at the 1070.

I have a small desk so I can't really have a 35 inch screen on my computer. I can only do 1080p gaming then but that's fine, lesser resources utilised.

For 1070, what is the better option: X 8G or 8G OC? The former is more expensive but the latter is Amazon's choice.

The difference there is the 'OC' bit. That mean it was factory overclocked for you, so for a little extra money, you get a little better performance. I wouldn't bother with the OC version, but that's up to you.

as for the mobo and ram question, yes and yes. plug potential components into pcpartpicker.com to see compatibility issues.

Yes, some ram is better than others. That comes down to latency, and timings, and a whole bunch of shit that I'm not qualified or comfortable giving advice on. Apparently, though, the differences are fairly minuscule. Just make sure you get enough ram

Except the OC was cheaper.
;)

huh, maybe some sale or something? Could you link them?

Yiss. RPM refers to the speed the physical disk spins at. the higher the RPM, the faster the drive is.

Cashe is a little more involved, and I'm not super comfortable with recommendations on that either. When picking a drive I look at GBs of storage and RPM of disk anyway.

functionally they're the same card, no idea why the OC is cheaper.

I can't find it ATM. Weird. So games of 17-18 are going to have 8GB as recommended?

8 to 16 GB is the best place to be right now. 16GB offers plenty of headroom for bigger programs and doesn't cost that much.

The less sticks of RAM you have, the faster it'll be (not really a noticeable difference for most people though) . Most people get 2X8GB.

Their minimum is 8GB, so with 16GB you're fine. Also, refresh my memory, is this DDR4 or DDR3 memory we're talking about?

More is better, but only to a point, otherwise it becomes unused and you've more or less spent money on something that didn't need it. You could spend that money on better components. Also, you may have seen 'more is better' in reference to faster memory vs. more memory, in which case, more is typically better to a point.

Of course DDR4. Why use older?

So, basically 16 is sufficient for four years?

[overkill=OK]

As for other parts, this is my rig for high-end gaming:
Intel i7-7700K [OK?] [Alt: i7 7700?]
MSI GTX 1070 ARMOR 8G OC [OK?]
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400 (PC4-19200) C16 for DDR4 Systems [Should I get Kingston HyperX Predator instead?]
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 P2 [OK?]
Asus Z270 Maximus IX Hero [OK?] {Alt: ASRock Z270 Killer SLI/ac and ASRock Fatal1ty B250M Performance]
WD 1TB 7200RPM [Is there enough data to prove that WD's or Seagate's HDDs last longer?]
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo vs be quiet! DARK ROCK PRO 3

Re: RAM
Optimally, I would be playing a game, background apps and might have the browser open. So, Steam+Game+Windows 10+Vivaldi [browser]+foobar2000.

16 means no problems, right?

Re: Silence
My CPU will be below my desk.

I forgot we were talking about basically a new PC, not just an upgrade. It's been a few days since I last looked at this thread before today. So that being said, yes, 16 GB should be plenty for the next 4 years. 8 GB is still considered more than enough for most things. As for the rest:

i7 - only get the K series if you plan to overclock. If not, just get the 7700.
1070 - will be great for 4 years for sure. especially at 1080 - 1440p
RAM - no real difference in Corsair and Kingston. As long as it's a trusted name and the amount of RAM you want, go for whichever is cheaper/looks better
750w PSU - a little overkill, but 80+ plat is great
HDD/SSD - Hard drive is fine, get a solid state though. With this build, there is no reason not to have one. Kingston and Samsung make great SSDs
heat sync - I love the 212 Evo. make sure it fits in your case though
