In a new build, I have 24 GB of RAM installed, BIOS recognizes all 24, but Windows says 24 GB installed (12 GB usable). I'm using an ASRock 970 Extreme 3 R2.0 with latest BIOS, and running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. In MSConfig, max RAM is unchecked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well if wanting to invest in new might it be the right time to upgrade the whole system, but if you want to keep going with what you have could you look at these two,

the more expensive is the better choice.

About the ram,i get the idea that even those 2 sticks of 8gb weren't from the same set? When combining so many different sticks would you probably have to do a clear cmos to make the same amount/value sticks work together again, also might need a little boost in the voltage if they aren't already using 1.65V (which is the highest amount you want to use safely).

You can try to give a litte extra voltage and loosening the first four timings to see if the other two sticks will...

Thanks for the reply. I do have mixed RAM (2 matched 8GB and 2 matched 4 GB), which I know is not ideal but it should work. I tried different combinations of RAM and slots and eventually got it to recognize both 8 GBs for a total of 16 GB. I'm just going to go with that for now, I think it may be a mboo issue.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. But, in the course of trying different combinations of RAM and slots, I had only the two 8GB sticks installed and it said only 8 was usable. I finally got it to fully recognize the 2 8GB sticks. I'm already considering a different mobo because I've had several freeze-ups with very limited usage. I've read of other people having similar freeze-up issues with this mobo/proc combo (fx-8350 and ASRock 970 Extreme 3 R2.0). Can you suggest a better budget mobo? Thanks again

You can try to give a litte extra voltage and loosening the first four timings to see if the other two sticks will play nicely, but 16gb is a fair amout of ram for normal use and games.

The 2 8GB sticks were actually ordered as a 16 GB kit, and came in the same package, so they're definitely from the same set. Also, this is actually a brand new build I just put together for my son's birthday. I've done plenty of hardware replacements over the years, but this is actually the first build I've done from scratch, so it may need some tweaking.

Thanks for the link, btw. I was actually just looking at those 2 mobos and debating maybe ordering one of them.

That's good,16gb is more than enough for most things. it's probably just better to sell the other set and get some money returned. Or if you are in the period which you still can return goods to the shop could you try that.

Hi welcome.:) See you are first time poster so look at dates when doing this. Understand the wish to help, but don't drag old posts up please.Read all of it as well since the OP (Original Poster) said he had W7 64bit and really could use 12gb which with 32bit wouldn't be possible. ;)
