So I've been looking to buy a m.2 ssd but then I see all these different types of connection for the m.2 and I don't know if it would work with my motherboard. I have a MSI Z170 Krait Gaming 3X and I wanted to get the WD Blue m.2 ssd

Solution
Are you sure about this?
WD Blue is not at all a road racer and it is not cheap.
In that regards I have to recommend MyDigital SSD BPX M.2
I have one myself and bouy, incredible and the warranty is 5-years and that is not at all common for a M.2 device.

It is a matter of fact that all test sites that I have read about SSD particular M.2 devices has only good words to say.
See here at Tom's: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/mydigitalssd-bpx-nvme-ssd,4780.html
And a very god price also.

It is only my Samsung 850 Pro 1TB who can match its speed, well not really...hehe.

But I have a question:
Your motherboard supports a M.2 device at PCIE 2.0 speed and if you mount it on one of your PCI-E slots you got PCI-E 3.0 x16...

Now, since I presume you are a gamer and therefore you will have a hefty graphics card at PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot at your motherboard and this M.2 ssd in the next or third slot (it really doesn't matter) so then your graphics card speed will come down to PCI-E 3.0 x8 which is half of the bandwidth.
I don't think this is crucial at all, but still a low transferring rate is not optimal.

Instead if you choose to mount your M.2 SSD on the inbuilt M.2 slot 2280 Key M(PCIe Gen3 x4/SATA )there will be no PCIE speed lost at the graphics card.

Of course a slightly lower transferring speed, but not to worry at all. It still will be almost twice as fast than my Sata 850 Pro 1TB SSD
But You will loose one of your Sata ports, SATA Express port if you have this and not to remember.

Best regards from Sweden
