My setup is a GTX 970 with an AMD A-10 7860k which I think is a pretty good setup but I cant even run most games on high settings. Is there any way my cheap motherboard could bottleneck my PC.

Solution

your graphics are fine, a 970 is very capable

HOWEVER your cpu is garbage for gaming, it is so slow it affects your gpu

especially in online games

that said make sure you are using the 970 and not the apu's built in

your monitor is hooked up to the 970 and not the mobo correct?

im not looking for the top of the line graphics. just enough to play most warthunder on max settings

Problem is you have a GPU that only Ryzen will not bottleneck. Your RAM is DDR3 that doesnt work with Ryzen. You could go with Intel but its the same deal on 1151 requiring DDR4. Your GTX970 is on par with the rx480 and 1060 3GB but the older AMD's on that motherboard are just way to slow. My 6 core Thuban is even bottlenecking my much slower R9 280.

You have a nvidia gtx970, therefore I'm going to assume you are running GeForce Experience also. You'll need to check the settings on that per game because GE will maximize performance of the gpu, which isn't always a good thing as you'll get limited fps due to the cpu. It's not uncommon for GE to try and drop a 4k DSR instead of a 1920x1080 (1080p) in optimized settings, which gives a great picture, at the expense of massive fps loss if your cpu is lackluster. Because these settings are gpu bound, they are considerably more intense than most games have as default, so by dropping the games actual settings, the ones not changed are set by GE, at optimized for the gpu.
In a nutshell, the gpu is demanding more than the cpu can give, so you'll see considerably lower fps.
GE isn't necessary at all, can be disabled or removed, the only thing needed is the gtx drivers which you can dl yourself.

My monitor goes from my mobo to my 970

Monitor plug should be in GPU, not motherboard. If it's in the motherboard, it's using the built-in A10 graphics.

The A10 is a terrible CPU for gaming. As said, you'd need at least an i5 or Ryzen setup to see a huge performance difference. The 970 is still quite a decent card - I don't plan on replacing mine for at least another generation.

this is why you are getting crap performance

the monitor needs to go directly to the back of the gpu

if you are plugging it into the motherboard you are not using the gpu at all
