Today I bought a new z170 a by asrock 130 CAD with $40 mir so $90. It's beautiful; black and white print, orange heatsinks and aluminum caps. Only problem, looks like missing a lot of ceramic caps and ics in this one corner. At first I thought it was because I bought the non 3.1 version but I checked on line and it looks like it has those components. Here, take a look:

So from your professional opinion, is it horrible design or is their picker machine broken?

Those empty placeholders are like the empty knockout plugs in the dash of your car. They serve to forever remind you of the options you neglected to purchase, that were available on other variants of the same platform for extra cost.

Some of the missing caps though are often because after testing the prototype, the manufacturer discovered they were really not necessary so deleted them from the production boards. There's no financial incentive for them to redo the silkscreen printing to tidy appearances in such a cutthroat business--they are already busy working on next years' models after all.

This is common when manufacturers make similar models of a board. They'll just make one PCB and vary the components depending on the model. I would not worry unless something is not actually working.

On Friday "Let's go home. We'll fix that Monday."
On Monday"Where is that board we needed to fix?"

The pictures of the Z17A-X1/3.1 have those parts. Could it be because your board is not a 3.1?
