hey there,

two days back i had 10 GB of free space on my local dis C drive. now it has come down to 3.75 GB. here are the list of things i tried:

1) Disk Cleanup
2) Deleting Temp files
3) Clearing unused media cache (after effects and premiere pro[i've allotted drives D and E for cache, but just in case]

I dont know what to do.

Here are my specs:

I7-4770@3.40gHZ
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520
8 GB of RAM
Windows 7 64 BIT OS
1 TB HDD

Also, I used to edit with almost no lag. Now the video stutters as i try to preview in the timeline.

thanks in andvance :)

Do you have Hibernation enabled? Do you use it? DO you have to use it? Could you use sleep instead...
well the stutter should be happening because u're out of space on C: which is the drive where the OS is installed, try to move some of your apps to other drives, if the problem persist, try to check it on anti virus, perhaps there's some kind of virus

(i'm not an expert, this is only a pure suggestion of mine [especially on the virus part] )

Definitely run a virus scan if you haven't been download or otherwise creating files.

To be honest, you should usually try to keep at least 20 GB open on your drives; as you go below that, you'll start to see performance issues.

Well not necessarily 20gb, from what I know, drivers becomes slower once it reaches critical point starting from 10% of your total drive space, so example, if your C: had 120gb space, the drive start to turn slower when u reach about 12 gb space

That can save you Several GBs worth of space. It saved me between 7 and 10GB. Been a while since I've disabled that. How much could it save you?

Hibernation will grow every day and the user can see that very clearly if they are low on disk space.

Is system restore enabled? You can Click start/ type System Restore and then click on Create a Restore point. You can then see if system restore is on. If it is you can click on Configure and delete all restore points. That can return 5GB or more. Yesterday I was at a little over 7GB worth of SSD space being used for my C drive. Today I was at a little under 9GB. Our workloads are completely different. So too will our SR sizes be different. When you click OK to close that screen make sure you Create a restore point before exiting it completely.

System restore also grows daily.

Have you cleaned your junk files? https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download can help with that. It does a better job than Disk Cleanup. You can leave Wipe Free Space unchecked. You can also decide which temp. files are deleted. Want it to not erase your saved passwords? You can do that. Depending on the time it's been since your last cleaning this step can save return several more GBs to your C drive.

Junk files will also add up if not cleaned.

https://windirstat.net/ is a utility which gives a visual indication of disk usage. See those large chunks of data
windirstat.png
They are using the most data on your PC. It shows you a file tree but you can also click on those blocks and right click on Explorer here and go directly to that file. The program can show you where you can possibly save the most space.

To be frank I'd invest in an SSD. and double your RAM if you ever can. That will help A LOT. But so too will cleaning up your HDD.

Wow this is really helpful. thank you so much... BTW, how about the windows pagefile.sys? its also taking so much space...

Right-click Computer.
Select Properties.
Select Advanced system settings.
Select the Advanced tab and then the Performance radio button.
Select the Change box under Virtual memory.
Un-check Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
Select No paging file, and click the Set button.

That is one move I would not make. Some programs and many games utilize the pagefile(aka swap file). Be aware that even if you disable the pagefile you will see a pagefile. It gets complicated. In the end I think that disabling the pagefile can cause more problems than it solves. Each person needs to decide for themselves if disabling it will be beneficial to them. Reducing its size is another option. What exactly does the pagefile do? Which of your programs benefit from the pagefile? How do they benefit? If you can't answer those three questions you should leave the pagefile alone.
