I am planning on building a gaming PC very soon and I have to choose between getting the core i5 7600k and getting the ryzen 5 1600. The PC is going to primarily be for 1080p gaming, which makes me initially think I should get the core i5 7600k, but there are a couple of reasons that I would want to get the ryzen 5 1600. First of all, it is cheaper and I could save even more money from not getting a cooler because the wraith spyre cooler is functional for the amount of overclocking I plan on doing. If the core i5 is significantly better than the ryzen, then I don't really mind spending the extra money, but I'm going to be getting the PC right before the Steam summer sale, so I'd like to have a little extra money if the CPU won't really make a difference. Also, even though I plan on using the PC for mostly gaming, I plan on using it without upgrading for a couple of years, and I may end up doing activities that take advantage of ryzen's more cores.

I should also mention that I plan on gaming with some form of voice chat program and possible a couple of other tabs running in the background.

Also, if you do recommend ryzen, could you recommend a good 2x4gb ram sets to go with the ryzen 5 1600? (I'll be getting the MSI B350 Tomahawk for my motherboard if that makes a difference)

1080p 60Hz or 144Hz?

Resolution makes next to no difference on cpu load, its what your target fps is. If high fps gaming the the i7 is king and Ryzen v i5 depends on the games. Between the i5 & Ryzen the i5 will do better in most games as the higher IPC and clock speed helps but in the few games where more threads helps the Ryzen will give more stable fps.

If 60Hz it doesn't really matter, both will do but the Ryzen looks like it should last longer and do better with future multithreaded games.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it in the post, but I'm only looking for a consistent 60fps. Thanks for the response.

Either is definitely capable of 60 FPS.

I'd go Ryzen - the i5 is a hard sell since Ryzen released @ similar prices.
