Let me get the specs out of the way first:

i7 7700k
Win 10 64 Pro
Z270 m7 mobo
Cryorig R1 Ultimate cooler
1Tb Samsung 850 Pro
1Tb Samsung 850 EVO
1TB WD Black Mechanical
16 Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000
EVGA GTX 1080 SC
Corsair RM 850x Gold PSU
CM Trooper full tower case

I decided to try a dual boot set up on the main SS Pro drive yesterday. After updating both operating systems, (the Win 7 partition taking easily the most time to do) and after the final update to Win 7 installed, I get the unsupported hardware message informing me the Kaby Lake is not supported under Win 7.

I did some searching, and came across mostly posts saying updates would not be available, and though it wasn't explicitly stated, it seemed that you could still use the OS on Win 7?

My reason for dual booting is that I am under the impression (correct or not) that trying to play/heavily mod classic Skyrim under a Win 7 partition might yield better performance and avoid the 4Gb VRAM limit when trying to play on Win 10 (I've tried it under Win 10 and had some performance issues not experienced before under Win 7).

My question comes to this... If I stick with the Win 7 partition, will it still operate normally and this message amounts to simply a lack of updates, or will I be plagued with issues and pop ups while that partition exists and experience deteriorating performance/operation? I understand Win 7 is NOT optimal for the hardware I have, and again, I only have it to try out classic Skyrim under the OS and DX version it was designed for while waiting (optimistically) for SKSE64 to come out.

I really wanted to check before giving up and reformatting to a full Win 10 installation, and I appreciate your advice ahead of time.

Solution
its not just security updates that's the issue it is also that there are no windows 7 drivers for the z270 chip set so you will be dealing with generic drivers that can become very unstable

Win 10 will only affect performance in skyrim if you exceed 4gb of VRAM in use, which would take quite a bit of mods. Win 10 has a 4gb limit for DX9 games, which makes sense as most DX9 games are 32bit anyway but with SKSE or maybe it was ENBoost that does it, but those mods allow you to exceed 4gb in use but not with the win 10 dx9 4gb limit.

As said above you wont get security updates and I have heard USB 3.0 and 3.1 ports just wont work for some people who have a kaby lake setup running win 7.

I may just have to scrap the idea. It's really for one game only anyhow, and I'm not particularly fond of the idea of no updates and generic drivers that could cause instability, or the lack of security updates, especially in light of the recent attack on non-updated Win 7 rigs.

I'll likely go to a full 10 install again, give it one more try, and then just wait for SKSE64 if I ever want to play that game again. I appreciate the input, here's to a great holiday weekend to you both!
