Hi!
I got an external hard drive about 2-3 years ago, some Seagate Backup Plus thing.
I used it for 2 years and everything worked out perfectly. One day though, when I tried to plug in the hard drive to my computer everything suddenly stopped. I could move my mouse, and everything looked normal. When I tried to open any application or the hard drive itself nothing happened. I spam-clicked google chrome about 20 times but nothing happened at all, though my computer did select google chrome when I clicked the icon. But nothing happened. When I pulled out my hard drive again (unable to pull it out safely since nothing would open) I got about 20 sessions of google chrome booting up, and all other things i tried clicking when I had the hardrive plugged in. This was maybe a year from now.

I forgot about it until today when my mom asked me for som images which I remember that I kept on the hard drive. When I plugged it in, the same thing happened. Nothing would open, not even the windows menu, but when I plugged out the drive everything that I had tried launching now launched. I don't know if this is solvable, but if it is, I would be happy.

And if there is a way to recover the files from the hard drive I would be really happy, since I would otherwise let my mom down... :(

Anyways, I'd be happy if someone knew something about this since that would help me very much.

Thanks, and good day!

First of all I want to apologize for a late reply, I was on a vacation anyways here's what you can do :
1. Open Command prompt (start menu, run, type cmd)
2.Type “chkdsk g:/F” if the external hard drive is Driver g: click Enter if not instead type the letter of the external drive
3. Now, it will start repairing damaged files, it will ask if you want to save lost chains into another location. Click "Yes"
if this doesn't help I'll link you some 3rd party software that will possibly help you

Yes I've tried that... The problem is that the managing applicaiton is not opening until I unplug the drive.. And even if I started the managing program and then plugged in the drive, nothing would launch inside the program, it's like the drive is "holding the computer back".

When you say external drive, I'm assuming that is an usb connected drive. If so, you can try to separate your drive from your usb adapter, and connect this drive, using a sata cable directly to your motherboard. Don't forget the power supply cable. Most likely your usb to sata adapter in your external drive, has a problem.
