The Price of the RX 480

So here's the deal. I have been a little confused about the price of the RX 480 recently. In the month of December or January, I bought an MSI RX 480 GAMING X 4G for my new rig I was building. After it was all said and done, including multiple discounts, I payed $155 for the GPU, and along with it came a copy of the game Civilization VI. I was very happy with my purchase. Then in the following months the price of the RX 480 dropped drastically. I saw the 4G model reach prices as low as $140. I stopped paying attention for a while. Now I come pack in the later half of May, and I check back on the RX 480 prices. The price for the MSI RX 480 GAMING X 4G is now $440 on Newegg. What the hell happened? I can't even find it on Amazon now. It's almost like the GPU completely disappeared and when I can find it the prices are insane. The newer model, the RX 580, is $200 cheaper. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I tried to find some information about the price of the GPU but came up empty. The Asus model is now $500 on Jet and $540 on Newegg. Is something wrong happening here? Did I miss something? Is this just the Law of Supply and Demand at work after the price decrease? I'm just confused. Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Now that the RX 580 is out pretty much, yeah. There's no reason to manufacture the older GPU when you can just manufacture a rebooted version. You'll absolutely be able to find ones to buy if you look other places out of the way, like eBay et. al however you'll now be hard pressed to find the old version of the GPU.

Newer model came out, why buy and/or manufacture the old one? Some people attempt to sell older GPUs for insane prices simply because there are no longer many in circulation. The ones you are looking at are not via regular retailers, they are likely via third party sellers and refurbs show pieces etc.

Thanks for the answer. It makes sense. But what now, you just can't buy the MSI RX 480 anymore?

The rx580's also have insane prices along with the 470's, 570's, and 480's. Most have ridiculous prices or are out of stock altogether. A month ago when I looked there were plenty of high end AMD cards for sale for around 140-260 now there all gone, got sold out. Idk what AMD's problem is, if they just need to manufacture more cards or something but I have no plans on buying until the prices drop.

Again... something I pointed out in the above post... Those are third party sellers. They are not sold by either Amazon or Newegg respectively, or sold directly by MSI. If you just search "RX580" and check off desktop GPUs in the advanced search filter, there is only one GPU there that is over the proper price, and it is also one of only four that are being sold third party. The other three are more fairly priced--however all of the GPUs being sold direct by Newegg are fairly priced. As for them being out of stock--there isn't much to do about that other than order one on a backlist, unfortunately. I don't know what's going on with either AMD's or each company's respective manufacturing, but unless they are prepping for something else I don't know that mid-range cards are something that they should be running out of stock of. The only things I can think of are either A) they are prepping the plant for something else or B) they are manufacturing more team green because they hold market share.

The reason why I pointed out the third party sellers is because there are the only cards in stock, and if they are any others they would have to be priced very high to stay in stock. Therefore if you instantly want to order one and don't want to wait the effective price would be extremely high. It's basic supply and demand when there is a small supply and high demand the price will rise and most of the cheap cards will be sold out first for obvious reasons.

And finally when you do check of desktop graphics cards all of them are out of stock except for the ones with extreme prices which tend to be from third party sellers.

Therefore you simply can't order a card immediately right now unless your willing to pay high prices which makes the effective price of the rx580 extremely high.
