I just bought an ASRock AB350 Pro4. I haven't built the system yet, because my Ryzen 7 1700 CPU is still "in the mail".

I chose the AB350 Pro4 for a number of reasons:

  • ■ I wanted a board that supported booting from an M.2 NVMe drive, and the ASRock specs called that out specifically
    ■ the M.2 slot is above the graphics card slot. Some boards bury the M.2 slot underneath the graphics card, which seems like a bad idea if you want to keep your SSD cool
    ■ newegg had a great deal going ($110 CDN after rebate)
    ■ I like the black and white colour scheme
    ■ it even has an RGB header, which surprised me for a B350 board
    ■ 4 PWM fan headers
    ■ 6 SATA ports

It has the type A and type C connectors associated with USB3.1, but the...

Out of those 2, definitely the MSI, Gigabyte are right at the bottom of the list where B350 boards are concerened, I had nothing but problems with my Gigabyte AB350m-Gaming 3, and the bios is rubbish, theres hardly any bios updates, they just dont seem to be fixing problems for this board, the Mortar is completely the other end of the scale, great board, and Great bios, loads of bios fixes for issues, and im a fanboy of neither, although I used to be a Gigabyte Fanboy, but not anymore.

It has the type A and type C connectors associated with USB3.1, but the specs do NOT mention 3.1, so that may not be present. I was not too concerned about that.

Note that all B350 boards do support overclocking, although I suppose it is up to each manufacturer to decide how easy to make that in the BIOS.

I think I might eventually upgrade to an X370 board, once the manufacturers figure out how to get their RGB control software working to my satisfaction. But on paper the ASRock AB350 Pro 4 looks like a sweet board that'll do everything I want.

I took a quick look at the specs for the Asus Prime B350 Plus, and it looks like a great board too. It's only got one M.2 slot, but it specifically calls out support for USB 3.1. I'm a huge fan of Asus, and would buy a board from them any day.

I've been trying to get Gigabyte to answer a technical question on a different board, and am getting no response, so that has soured my impression of that company.
