I have one in my first gaming rig build around 6 months old now and I wonder how long the ancient techies who have seen it all predict it will last until i need and upgrade.

I will currently game at 1080p 60hz and will be getting a gaming monitor at 144hz in time, no dreams of 4k gaming any time soon.

I dont game hardcore but i do play triple A titles.

I plan to upgrade from my i5 4690k overclocked at 4.2ghz on air to the i7 4790k and overclock that on and aio at somepoint.

And bump my 8GB of ram to 16 or 32 depending on what i need for VR when i get it and future games.

I've been a member of Tom's Hardware since 2009 and before that I was lurking around. In 2011 I had a GTX 460. I upgraded in 2012 to sli GTX 470. Then I switched to a GTX 770 in 2013. After that I upgraded to a GTX 970 in 2014. Then in 2015 I upgraded to a GTX 980 ti. In 2016 I upgraded to a GTX 1080. Finally in 2017 I upgraded to a GTX 1080 ti. I've seen my fair share of Nvidia graphics cards.

I've tried out:

GTS 8800 320MB
GTS 360m 1GB
GTX 460
GTX 470
GTX 560
GTX 560 ti
GTX 680
GTX 770
GTX 970
GTX 980 ti
GTX 1070
GTX 1080
GTX 1080 ti

Some of these I've tried in sli as well.

I've had a lot of experience with graphics cards.

So if you're anything like me you want to upgrade every year. So how long will it be before you have to...
The card will last for years and years under normal use and the "need" to upgrade is subjective based on many factors.
Perhaps a different question is "How long will the card remain graphically competitive/competent considering the evolution of games and technology ?"
This also depends perhaps on how important gaming will be to you as you age and mature and whether your interests change.

So if you're anything like me you want to upgrade every year. So how long will it be before you have to upgrade? You can generally go by this..

For Nvidia: XX80 ti will last 4 to 6 years, XX80 will last 3 to 5 years, XX70 will last 2 to 4 years, XX60 will last 2 to 3 years, XX50 ti will last 1 to 2 years and the XX50 will last a year. Anything lower than that is already too weak to play every game that is out.

Now this is just a generalization based on years of observation. I can't tell the future. Your mileage may vary depending on whether or not you want 4K down the line or even 8K and it depends on what games you want to play. Actually you may even be forced into upgrading to 4K as 4K becomes the norm. Your display might mess up and you might have to buy a 4K display if 1080p ones are phased out unless you want something used. When that happens.... If that ever happens... Then you have to upgrade your GPU to play games at your monitor's native resolution.
