Modern Onboard RAID

There is a massive difference between hdds and ssds. But when I got my 840pro and tested between it and my older SATA II Samsung SSD I saw nearly no difference. Even though it's reading and writing nearly twice as fast. Add in issues with RAID drivers and the dangers of AID0 and I wouldn't suggest anyone use it. As USAF said, buzzwords sell. Don't mean you need to use it though.

Keep in mind raid 0 is not a good idea in terms of reliability.
If one disk goes, you lose everything on both.

I personally prefer software raid in windows for raid 0 or 1. That way you can set up individual partitions instead of being forced to do entire drives.
e.g. if you have 2x 1TB drives, you can partition them both in half
Disk 1 - C: 512GB
Disk 2 - D: 512GB
E: raid with the remainder space of the two.
Raid 0 will make E: a high performance drive / Raid 1 will make E: a high reliability drive
Raid 0 will also only work if your controllers don't bottleneck.

1. Needlessly complex.
2. Performance of that is easily beaten with an SSD.
3. Does nothing for any data reliability. Only an actual drive fail.
