Windows 7 overrides windows 10

Hello all,
I recently (last week) built a brand new computer and successfully installed Windows 10. it worked great. i later (today) wanted to wipe a laptop HDD. i installed it in the computer alongside the windows 10 HDD. the Windows 7 laptop HDD overrides windows 10. i figured this was just normal. i then uninstalled the laptop HDD from the computer. when i again tried to boot with just the windows 10 HDD, it didn't work. it said i did not have a HDD installed and refused to boot. Can anyone help me?

Have you set the HDD with Windows 10 on it as boot priority #1 in the BIOS?

Depending on the configuration in there, the port you attached the W7 drive to was likely priority #1 - so it booted there first.

At this point i don't care about the laptop HDD. I can fix that in a different computer. Currently, I just want to get the W10 working. But, when I boot, it goes to the MoBo startup screen, and then gives me the error "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"
I have restarted many times, and I have pressed "any key" multiple times. it just relays the command.

Enter your BIOS, disable (or enable.... just the opposite of what it current says) CSM/Legacy support and Fastboot

I simply pressed "Load optimized defaults" and the problem was solved! Thank you!
I will now try to plug in the laptop HDD and wipe it. Anything you can suggest?

I suspect it was an OS dependent setting (legacy/CSM/Fasboot etc) that was matching the W7 OS moreso than the W10 OS.

Provided the settings remain unaltered in the BIOS and the W10 HDD/SSD is set to priority #1, it should boot to it, with the W7 drive being secondary.

I got it to boot into windows 10 with the laptop drive installed. Now, how would I completely remove all files from the drive?

It depends. Is this for reuse or disposal?

For reuse by the original user (or someone they trust), you could just format it inside Disk Management and then it can be used as a storage drive, or an OS reinstalled etc.

If it's for disposal (or to sell a laptop with a drive), there are freeware programs out there that will write zeros to the drive...... which makes it harder to recover data - but not impossible. For those uses, a new driver would be more recommended.
