Replacement Video Card

Hello. I have an HP Pavilion Elite m9340f Desktop. The desktop was purchased circa 2009. HP replaced the video card, under warranty. The card is an NVIDIA GE Force 9500 GS. Several years ago, the power supply failed. I replaced it with a 450 watt power supply (it has been awhile since that occurred, so I cannot be sure. I do know that the new psu is more powerful than the original). So, I now think that the fan has failed on the graphics card. It was noisy even after HP replaced the original. With that in mind, what kind of card is a good replacement. I do not do gaming, so it does not have to be really powerful. I am looking at the card and the fan is not spinning. The card shuts down after watching a video.

That's a pretty old system but on the plus side Asus made the motherboard. So it probably conforms to standards. Since you upgraded the power supply I think you have a better range of options. The 1030 is a fine card for basic use, and casual gaming. However, given the age of your system and your nongaming needs, I'd consider going with a GT 710. It'll handle HD video, has HDMI output, and can be had in passively cooled models. Dead quiet operation. It's also virtually guaranteed to be compatible with your system, something that can't be said for the new Nvidia cards.

There is no point of getting gt 710. This card is one of the worst! It's better to run on integrated gpu from intel then. Get gt 1030. This gt 710 is really bad.

I really appreciate the answers I am receiving to my question. I need to ask one final question, the GT 710 you mentioned, does the manufacturer matter (PNY, EVGA, etc.)? Should I try for a 2 GB version or stay with a 1 GB card? Please accept my apologies for the questions. There are so many choices out there, I want to try to make a good choice.

Did not see your reply originally. I read some reviews on the 710 that were quite favorable. Cost is not a big issue. I do not do gaming, but do watch a lot of model railroad videos.

Yeah , then why not invest in a new cpu without a gpu and get way better results? Simply buy a pentium g4560 and new motherboard. It will be able for you to use it for another 5 years or even 10. If watching the videos is the case.
