Is my ASUS r7 265 dead? Black screen on win7 startup, works fine without drivers installed.

Hi, guys.

So here is the situation, when I was in a game my monitor suddenly went very dark grey (it didn't turn off just was this dark color, almost black) and wouldn't get back to normal, I thought it had something to do with the monitor itself, so I tested some cables and what not, rebooted and everything worked fine. Same thing happened again in a few hours, but this time first there were lines on the screen, of medium dark grey and then it went very dark again. I thought that since at the startup monitor works fine, it might be that drivers are acting up, so I decided to update to latest AMD drivers (17.5.2).

After rebooting, the windows starts booting with windows logo (win7 x64), but when it should load the 'enter your user/password screen' it goes back to this very dark grey color (monitor is on, it's working), there is also no windows start up sound.

Thinking that it again has something to do with the drivers I tried restoring to a previous image where I had no drivers at all (used DDU in safe-mode). Everything worked fine without the drivers, the card got detected as some kind of standard VGA something. So i tried different versions of drivers (some of which worked well in the past on exactly the same system), all end up with the same problem, windows doesn't boot.

So now I've got an old card on and everything is working fine.

My question is, after reading about similar cases online, does this mean my ASUS r7 265 is dead, or is there something I can do to check the card/fix the situation?

Thanks you for your time.
