I've had a 1TB WD Elements external drive for around a year. It's near capacity. For the past few months I've been having issues with my USB disconnecting/reconnecting multiple devices, including the WD drive. Now the WD drive is showing in Windows Explorer but is not accessible. No error message, the drive just does not load.
What I've tried:
When I try to open Disk Management to view the drive I get the same result as in Windows Explorer, the window fails to load until the drive is disconnected.
The drive appears in Device Manager under both Portable Device and USB Mass Storage Device. When I try to uninstall under Portable Device it is successful but immediately reloads. Uninstall of USB Mass Storage is successful and comes back after reboot but issue persists. Update of both fails to find new drivers.
The obvious step is to try the drive on another computer. The problem with that is I'm currently in a country where few people speak English. I'm afraid the frequent disconnects and reconnects of the USB have fried the drive, but I'm reaching out in hopes of any ideas I could try.
