Can someone help me choose a CPU to upgrade to?

I currently have a i5-3570K and i feel like it's just not enough anymore i'm willing to wait until late 2018 to get a new CPU. I don't think Kaby lake is worth the upgrade. My budget for a CPU would be around $400-500. I don't really care if it's AMD or Intel. With Intel revealing their new CPU's today and new micro-architectures Coffee Lake and Cannon lake coming soon, i think it would be interesting to know which would be the best.

So Ryzen is great but i want to see what else AMD can do. Intel is coming out with Coffee Lake soon, and Cannonlake a year right behind that with it's 10nm die shrink. I guess what i'm asking is what seems like it will be the best performance off your current knowledge?

I don't think Kaby lake is worth the upgrade.

I picked up a 3770k on Ebay for like 90 bucks. That seems to be a lot better than my old 2500k. After x299 comes out prices will fall on new old stock x99 boards and cpus.

There is always something better to wait for. Depends how urgent the upgrade is, but 3570K can still pack quite a punch.

If you're willing to wait until late 2018, then it would probably be better to ask this question in 2018. By that time, there will be new CPUs from both companies, so the CPU you would want to buy then will most likely be different from what's available today, and it's difficult to say how those CPU will perform or how they will be priced.
