First of all, I'm fairly new to this. I bought a friends old computer a few years ago running:

Intel i5 2390t
Gtx 660
Pegatron 2ac2 motherboard
8 GB of DDR3 RAM
Generic 500W psu

Works great, but was recently gifted a gtx 980 sc acx 2.0. Immediately I had to replace the psu (EVGA 600W bronze) due to lack of pci 6 pin adapter mine had. Afterwards pc wouldn't boot, and gave me a beep code. After doing research, as far as I can tell it's the motherboard that is incompatible with the card (BIOS?) My questions are: is it work upgrading most of my system for the card? Do I need to upgrade to a motherboard that is DDR4 compatible and my RAM with it? I'm on a fairly tight budget, any tips? Thanks!

Yes. you would need to upgrade your current processor. If you want to keep your DDR3 ram, I would recommend going for something like the i5 4690k with a nice Z97, a combo which shouldn't cost you over $300 and would kill most things you throw at it.

Sorry for the late reply, to be honest I'm not really sure what my budget is, I've been stuck in console-land for so long that I don't know what a reasonable price is to upgrade a computer. I would say as cheap as possible, but I'm kind of hoping for a low to midrange build. Depending on price, it may just take awhile to buy the parts. Is there an issue with using the hp case I have? Is it worth transferring my current processor?
Thank you for the help!
