i Have an old Sandy Bridge-E i7 3930k which is now just over 5 years old, i can overclock to a stable 4.7ghz, however when i do the motherboard has issues booting back up if the machine is turned off overnight, apart from that the machine works fine. so my question is this - is it worth the upgrade to a Ryzen 7 1700x? my machine is used for 60% Gaming and 40% Lightwave rendering, it should be noted that if i was to buy the ryzen i would be overclocking to 4.0Ghz.

Most definitely Dahofrin :)

You would have considerable gains with the Ryzen 7 1700X
Much more recent technology. 14nm Lithography as apposed to 32nm on the i7 3930K.
Lower TDP draw 95W as opposed to 130W Efficiency.
An 8 core processor as opposed to 6 cores
16 threads as opposed to 12 and a 15-20% gain in Speed.
Ryzen uses DDR4 on the new AM4 platform so much faster RAM than DDR3.

The concensus is Ryzen is amazing at rendering because of the high core count.

However if you are unsure, you could wait for Threadripper or even Coffee lake at the end this year, which intel announced will boast 6 cores.

In any case, whats important to know when opting for Ryzen, is that above all else Ryzen is hungry for high memory speed for gaming.
A stock 1700 paired with 3200Mhz memory consistently beats a stock 1800X paired with 2133Mhz memory in gaming benchmarks.

I compared my Xeon E5-1659 v1 with a Ryzen 1700x and for the 2 games testet (Bf 1 and GTA V Benchmark) the RX 480 we both used where the limiting factor. Nearly same results
