DDR4 Memory latency?

Why is most of the new DDR4 latency a lot higher than most of the older DDR3 memory.Even some of the more expensive DDR4 memory with 3000mhz has has latencies in between 15 to 19. But most of the DDR3 has latencies in between 7 to 11. I thought the lower the latency the better the memory. any help out there?

Real latency is measured in nanoseconds. Divide the latency cycle by the memory clock (half the data rate) and you get the real latency. CL15 at 3000MT/s for DDR4 is the same as CL10 at 2000MT/s on DDR3 for latency.

they dont show the data rate on the specs on newegg. but what is the difference between a 3000mhz at 16 latency or a 2666mhz at 15 latency?

As I know it, the data rate is the memory clock, just represented in MT/s.
The clock is actually, half of what is listed in the specs, but because of DDR(Double Data Rate) it gets doubled.

16 / 3000 * 2 = 10.67ns
15 / 2666 * 2 = 11.25ns

3000MT/s CL16 has 12.5% more bandwidth and 5% lower (better) latency.
